In today’s fast-paced world, navigating crowded streets can be difficult for anyone—but for people who are visually impaired, everyday mobility comes with unique challenges. Thankfully, technology is stepping in to make life safer and easier.

Traditionally, those with vision loss have relied on canes or guide dogs to help them move around safely. But now, an Austrian company called Tech-Innovation has developed a groundbreaking tool that takes independence to the next level.

They’ve created a pair of smart shoes, called InnoMake, equipped with built-in sensors that detect obstacles and alert the wearer through vibrations or sound signals.

How Do These Smart Shoes Work?

The InnoMake system uses a sensor that can detect obstacles as far as four meters away and as close as half a meter. The sensor is designed to fit neatly into a slot in the shoe and runs on a rechargeable battery. One full charge lasts up to a week, and recharging takes only about three hours.

To make things even more convenient, the shoes are paired with a free app. Through the app, users can customize settings—such as choosing the distance at which they want to be alerted about obstacles.

Built for Real-Life Conditions

One of the most impressive features of these shoes is their durability. The sensors are water-resistant, meaning they continue working even in rain or snow. And when users sit down, the intelligent mode automatically deactivates the sensor, then reactivates it once they begin walking again.

Try Before You Buy

In Austria, several shops now offer visually impaired people the chance to test these smart shoes before purchasing, making the experience more accessible and user-friendly.

These shoes are more than just footwear—they represent freedom, safety, and independence for people living with vision loss. Next time you see someone wearing them, you’ll know just how much life-changing technology is hidden inside those steps.
